March 31- Easter

Over here this is just like any other day of the week or year.  All are out working, buying or whatever suits their fancy today.  Batty is planting flowers around the outside of her house.

This morning we skyped Bert and told him good night as it was bed time for him Saturday night and 9 am Sunday for us.

Good night Daddy
March 30  Oh what a day

Batty, Brian, Pan and I went to Sisaket today for plants and bricks to finish the landscaping in front of the house.  We met some of her relatives at the MD (Master of Delicious) cafe.  While sliding into the booth my left foot slipped and I really banged my big toe.  My toenail needs trimming and is really hard.  It did not break but sure took a bang. I could walk back to the truck OK but the longer I sat the more it hurts.  Batty had several more stops to make and Brian fell asleep on my lap.  So I did a lot of sitting.

Brian has spent many hours like this on my lap.

Went past a time and temp place and it read 44C.  I checked it out and that is 111.2 F.  I also checked where in the world we are located and we are 13 degrees north of the equator.  I guess we can expect warm temps here.

Brian bumped his head and I said bump and he repeated it to me severeal times this afternoon.  One interesting thing about that is one of nieces is married to a man with the last name of Bump.

March 27 - Pan's 6th grade graduation

An interesting day and a new title for me, Pan's Grandmother.

The school had their 6th grade graduation.  We went over to see Pan get his diploma and an award for something he had done for the school.

They have quite a production for these kids.  A monk, old elder of the town (83), & various school officials are there.

After a few quite long speches then the elder comes and starts the procession of people putting white cords around both of the students wrists for good luck.  I put 2 on Pan.

Then some young girls dance quite a slow Thai dance for them.  These young girls were really painted and dressed up for the occasion.  I think I could have danced with them.

After the dance they each ate a hard boiled egg
they had brought from home.  This symbols a new life
a new beginning.

They then got back into their formal rows and the principal
gave them a long speech.  Parts must have been funny as there
was a lot of laughing.
Again I felt like I was at the Tower of Babel and got left with
the wrong group.  There were a couple of ladies that spoke
English well so I could talk a little with them.
After the principal was done a group of the teachers sat across room
in front of the stage  The students came up in groups of about 15 and
stood in front of a teacher.  A parent or grandparent sat in a chair
in front of the student.  I was chosen to be Pan's grandmother.

The students then turned and knelt in front of the teacher
and was given some words of encouragement from the teacher.

The teacher then gave the student back to the parent or
grandparent for more words of encouragement and to
take home.

Pan is such a wondergful young man that I would
like to take him home with me and be his grandmother.
Maybe someday he will come and live with Bert and Batty
and then I will be his grandma.

March 26

The last couple of days have been more of the same.  Thought I'd wait until I had something to write about.

I walked a couple of blocks down the road and watched 2 older ladies weave silk.

This lady is weaving the natural color silk into a
more rough weave.  I have some of this in a creamy
yellow made into a jacket I wore for Bert and Batty's
reception at my place.
Tun gave me a large piece in peach color will have to think
of something to mak it into.

Before going to see the 2nd lady I had to wait for the cows
to go home.
These cows are kept at night in the yard of the farmer's home.
In the morning they will be walked out to a field to graze all day
and then at night brought back to the house yard.
About all they are used for is fertilizer.

This lady is making a more colorful red and blue striped.
In the evening many sit outside and watch the others walk by.
These ladies had seen Brian and I out walking and wanted to talk
to me but neither knew the others language.  Batty translated for
us this evening.  They thought I looked so strong.  Must be that
I am about 3 times their size.  I think the largest size here in town
is about a size 12 or 14.  Interesting being the only white and largest
lady in town.  They seem to all look up to me and think I am OK.
They are really interested in an American/white person.
They had seen Bert and Brian walk by and thought he was reallt big and strong.

March 23

Another day of little to do but sit near the fans.
We did get thunder, lightning, wind and some rain last night so really humid today.
It is so hot Brian has a hard time taking a nap.  One sweats just sleeping.
We had a very interesting supper tonight.  We cooked over home made charcoal.  The pan we used to grill the meat has a tray around the bottom for broth where we cooked veggies while the meat was grilling.  The meat was pork, beef, chicken, squid, and fish all cut into strips for grilling.  The squid was jsut small squid cooked whole.

The grill is made of cement.  The live/burning
charcoal is put into that the grilling pan on top.
Broth is poured in to the pan with veggies and noodles and meat grilled on the top.

Lhong putting meat on the grill and Pan taking
soup out.

Waiting for supper to cook.
Coke is very popular here.  No sugar free but have
seen caffine free.

Batty's house

Batty has been doing a lot of improvements around her house.  Will explain some as I go.

Batty's house
There was no wall around and people kept walking
through her yard.  Once in awhile something was missing.
They decied to put up this wall.  There will be a gate and metal
slats between the posts.

The patio in front of the house.
She has now put sod around the outside and down
the far side of the house.
Those are empty water bottles in the boxes in front.
Water is delivered like milk was years ago in the USA.

A thachted building across the driveway.
Her sister in law had a noodle shop and this is where
the customers ate.
There is now a wall between it and the neighbors property.
The flowers in front are moss roses.

Many homes have some little shop in front.  Many sell
soups, noodles, fruits, veggies and some just snacks like
chips etc.  The neighbor across the street has cold treats
like a fruit syrup over crushed ice with bits of finger jello,
fruit and cubes of bread in them.  Really quite refreshing
in this type of weather.  He gets many customers when school
lets out for the day.

There is one great room in the house.
The doors are to the 2 bedrooms.
The door on the left is where Batty was waiting and Bert
had to find her at their Thai wedding.
Silk pillows are in the case to the right and their TV to the
left of the doors.
Front door is open.
Every home has a TV and most all people have
I-phones, I-pads, at least some sort of cell phone etc.
No lack of technology here.
The programming is all in Thai but what I can see I
would not want to watch it anyway, so violent.  Ads are
for candy or lotions.  The kids cartoons are mostly
super heros blowing up something.

Dining and living area.
Most of the time we eat outside.
The far wall is where the monks sat when blessing
the home before the wedding.
The side wall is where the bartering went on for Bert
to get Batty.

Door to the outside and kitchen area.
Small frig, microwave and cupboards.
The top left corner is the steps to the upper level.
It is no longer used except for storage.
When Batty was young they lived upstairs and had
the bottom for storage, onion drying etc.  When her
mother got sick Batty had the bottom finished off
so it would be easier for her mom.

Brian sleeping on a mat on the floor.
They are surprisingly comfortable.
All floors are tile.
Some homes still have the dirt floor but I have not seen one.

One of several permanent residents.
A bug catcher.
The way I hate lizards I will be glad when I do not
have to be with geckos all the time.
The homes are so open that they are in and out all
of the time.
There are bigger ones that live in the trees and do a barking
type noise at night.  I have seen one of those and that was
in the home where I sleep.  It was in the kitchen area
looking over the wall into my bathrooom.  Needless to
say I spent as little time in the bathroom as possible.
It was only there the one time.

Outside the back door.
shoe rack and broom
They use these booms as many sweep dirt and these
will sweep the junk out but not sweep up a lot of the dirt.
The fiber for these grow on trees.
I  saw a tree but could not get a picture of it as we were
driving down the road and could not stop.

Pan using the broom in the main room of the house.
He sweeps the house at least once a day, often twice.
He usually mops the house once a day also.
With the dirt and dust here, one can not keep the house
clean.  Shoes are taken off at the door and not worn in the
house.  My shoes are usually at the wrong door, so I bought
another pair.  Batty likes to wear my big shoes so who knows
where I will find mine.

Eastern toilet.
She has taken this one out and put in a western one.
The pink jar has water and a dipper for flushing.
I took this picture a little late as there was a big barrel
in the left corner that was full of water and a dipper
for showering.  It was already taken out for demolition of
the old bathroom.

Old bathroom having a sledge hammer used on it.
The new one is in the background.

Down goes the wall.

Putting the metal roof on the new bathroom.

New western style bathroom.
City water is often shut off so the barrel of
water comes in handy for those times.

Modern sink that works when water is on.
The dipper in the barrel comes in handy for
washing hands.

Batty cooking in the old kitchen.
You can see the outside of both bathrooms.

Pri (Batty's sister in law) and Batty cooking in old kitchen.
The cement bags are there so they can be undercover
in case it rains.  There had been no rain since
I had arrived.  Have had 3 rains in the last 2 months.
Not much rain with any of them.

Moving the bags of cement.
Two men lift a bag and put it on one's head and he
takes and puts it into the truck or cart.  They do it this
way at a lumber yard also.  Only there, 2 lift it and put it
on a 3rd one's head.  There are several carriers so it gets
done faster.  I watched them load a larger truck while
Batty was inside getting things for her projects.
The car is the one I used for about a week.

Cleaning the fish tank.
Taliapia was to be put here but decided against it
as Batty is going back to the USA soon.  It is empty.
Garden in the front.  Tomatoes sure are good from there.
There is now a cement fence between the tank and neighbors house.

New eves

Down spout
Neighbor's house across thr fence.

New fence across back of property
You can see the neighbor's shrine across the fence.
Most home have one on their property.

new grass
front of house

side of house

Working on the back and side yard.

A friend brought his tractor several times and leveled
the dirt around the yard.

Batty breaking up the clods of dirt.

Working on the side yard.
He attaches the disk for weight in the back for weight.

East side of house
sod and shrubs

West side of house

Brian

We frequently catch Brian in an interesting or cute moment.  Will share some or them with you.  I wish I would have had my camera the other day.  He was crawling on the patio in the front of the house.  He got off to the side where it was a little hard on the knees.  He got up on his hands and feet until it got more smooth.  I was to be watching him, the camera was in the house and he quite near the driveway.  People were in and out getting other parts of the yard finished.  I couldn't leave him to get the camera and by then he would be on smoother ground.  We often call him "little monkey"  he sure fit the name the way he walked.
